Gus and I went back to the lake during the week, and it was great. There wasn't near as many people as the other day. We went to a couple of the shops. There was even a natural foods store. We drove all around the whole lake. That took quit a few hours. We also learned a little of the lake's history. It was started when 25 million years ago, the earth's crust had a tremendous uplift which became the Sierra Nevada mountains. The valley that became known as the Tahoe Basin, sank between the parallel faults as the Sierra Nevada, and Carson Range rose up on either side. Several million years ago, lava flowed from Mt. Pluto from the north shore, formed a barrier across the basin's outlet. Water from rivers and streams flowed into the basin gradually filling it and creating Lake Tahoe. Water continued to accumulate in the Lake until it found it's present outlet, the Truckee River. There was a woman who had built a house on the beach in Emerald Bay. There was and still is an island there. A very rich woman had built the first house hear. Though I should say castle. She was very rich and this was her summer house. The only island in the lake. She had stone hauled to the top of the island making a room about 16 x 16 feet. Here she would come, sometimes bringing guests to drink tea. There is also is a storey about the caretaker. Back in the late 1800 there was nobody in Lake Tahoe so he would take his boat/canoe to Virgina City. One winter night on his way home he hit a winter storm. So he tied a rope to himself and to the boat. He got thrown out of the boat and waited out the storm. It worked and he lived. But the same thing happened the next year so he did the same thing. This time though the boat capsized and he was pulled under and drowned. After people realized he was missing they went looking for him but no one has found him. So as the story goes there is a dead man in the lake.

ReplyDeleteWow, a castle room on your own island! Now THAT'S rich. Right up my alley. I'd love to have a place like that to go...without all the tour boats though...:) Must have been amazing back in the day when there were fewer people. Too bad about the caretaker. Guess it's better not to tempt fate twice...:o
ReplyDeleteCool you've been able to spend time with family for an extended visit. I'm sure they are enjoying having you guys there. Can't wait for my little visit with you. In about a month! Yeah!!! xo
